Transitions is a book of poetic recollections and homages to the painters and poets, to the writers and makers he knew and studied while at Black Mountain College.
ABOUT BASIL KING — Basil King will begin his ninety-first year in Brooklyn this year in the house where he paints, draws and creates images drawing on a lifetime of engagement with a host of other artists, writers, and workers. He was sixteen when he entered Błack Mountain College in North Carolina, he was three years old when the German Blitz shattered his Lower Eastside homeland in England.s His community of saints has grown every year since. All of his work combines traces of a language of devotion. From foundational abstraction to the many variants of English as moulded by poets he loves. Two recent series—Out of the Box, with prose poetry and large drawings of magical city pigeons, and The Tablets, abstract oils on canvas hiding and dancing with the words of small poems by Basil—show his obsessions are not fading with age. Much of his work is available to the public via his website (www.basilking.net) or in his books. This book, Transitions, reflects his pleasure at being associated with Danny Rosen and the many fine works available through Lithic Press.
